Hair Consultation Questions to Ask Your Stylist in Doha

"Just a trim" is the most dangerous sentence in a salon. To you it means one centimetre. To a busy stylist it might mean five. Almost every haircut that goes wrong goes wrong in the first three minutes, before the scissors come out, because nobody asked the right questions.

A good consultation fixes that. Below, we follow one appointment from booking to the mirror, with the questions to ask at each step and what a good answer sounds like. If you are still looking for a stylist, you can compare hair salons for ladies in Doha with their areas and current offers in one place.

When You Book

Ask how long the appointment is and whether a consultation is included. A colour or keratin booked into a one-hour slot is a warning sign. Many salons in Doha will do a short free consultation before a big change, and some ask you to come in a day early for a patch test. If you want a specific stylist, ask for her by name, since busy salons may give you whoever is free.

Before You Sit Down

Bring pictures. Words like "soft", "natural" and "a bit shorter" mean different things to different people, but a photo does not. Bring one photo you love and one you do not, ideally on hair that looks like yours.

Tell the stylist about your colour history, including henna. Henna is common in Qatar and it can react with bleach and some dyes, so a stylist needs to know even if it was months ago. Mention box dye too. It is easy to forget, and it changes everything about how colour takes.

Say how you really wear your hair. If it lives under a shayla most of the day, tied back for work or in a bun at the gym, a high-maintenance cut may not be worth it. A good stylist will design for your week, not for the photo.

Before the First Cut

Ask: "Will this shape suit my hair type?" Thick, curly and fine hair all behave differently, and a cut from a photo may need adjusting. Then agree the length by touching it, not by saying a number. Point to where the shortest layer will fall. If you want layers, say where they should start: around the chin, the collarbone or lower.

Before Colour or Chemicals

For colour, ask whether you need a patch test and whether a toner is included in the price. Toner is what turns brassy blonde into the shade in the photo, and it is often an extra. Ask how many sessions a big change will take. Going from dark to light safely is often two or three visits.

For keratin and other smoothing treatments, ask which brand the salon uses and whether it is formaldehyde-free. Ask how long you must wait before washing or tying your hair, which matters if you cover your hair daily.

Halfway Through

It is fine to speak up mid-cut. "Can I see the length before you go shorter?" is a normal question, and a good stylist will happily stop and check. It is much easier to cut more than to grow it back.

At the Mirror

Before you leave, ask how to style the cut at home and which products the stylist used. Ask when to come back. Layers and colour usually need a refresh every six to ten weeks, and Doha's sun and dry air can fade colour faster, so ask about colour-safe care too.

If something is not right, say so now, calmly. Most salons will adjust it on the spot or book a free fix within a few days. Booking a full routine before Eid or a wedding? Frequently Asked Questions

What should I ask in a hair consultation?

Ask whether the cut suits your hair type, what the exact length will be, whether toner and blow-dry are included, and how to style it at home.

Should I tell my stylist I used henna?

Yes. Henna can react with bleach and some dyes, so mention it even if it was months ago.

Is a hair consultation free in Doha?

Many salons offer a short free consultation before a big change. Ask when you book.

How do I ask for layers?

Bring a photo and point to where the shortest layer should start, for example at the chin or the collarbone.

What if I don't like my haircut?

Tell the stylist calmly before you leave. Most salons will adjust it or book a free fix.

How we checked: We put together the questions stylists say clients most often forget to ask, and matched them to what women in Doha deal with day to day, from henna to heat, in October 2026.

A note on chemicals: if you have sensitive skin, a scalp condition or a past reaction to hair dye, ask a doctor before booking colour or smoothing treatments.
