Fish Markets in Qatar: Where to Go
Doha has five proper fish markets. Each suits a different trip: bulk buying, a quick stop near the Corniche, or a market-to-table dinner.
| Market | 📍 Where | 🕘 Hours | 🔪 Cleaning | ⭐ Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Umm Salal Central Market | Umm Salal Mohammed, off Al Shamal Rd | Early to late; auction after Maghrib | Yes, from about QAR 1/kg | Bulk buying, lowest prices |
| Chabrat Al Mina | Old Doha Port, Mina District | Daily, reported 9am–6pm | Free | Premium and imported seafood, cook-your-catch |
| Corniche Fish Market | Near Museum of Islamic Art | From 6am, 7 days | Basic | Boat-fresh local catch, small trips |
| Al Wakrah Fish Market | Al Wakrah, near the harbour | Mornings | Yes | South Doha residents |
| Al Khor Fish Market | Al Khor | Mornings | Yes | North Qatar residents |
Umm Salal Central Market
Qatar's biggest fish market and the cheapest place for local catch in bulk. Around 50 fish vendors sit under one temperature-controlled roof, with an auction yard and dedicated cleaning areas where staff clean and cut for a small per-kilo fee. The fish and seafood auction is usually held after Maghrib prayer, per the Ministry of Commerce and Industry; timings change during Ramadan. Go on a weekday or early on a weekend to skip the crowd, carry cash (there's a mobile ATM by the fish hall), and keep a pair of flip-flops in the car.
Chabrat Al Mina (Old Doha Port)
The most photographed fish market in Qatar: air-conditioned, odour-free, with a stained-glass ceiling. It sells local hamour and shaari alongside imported salmon, tuna, sea bass, lobster and oysters, cleans your fish for free, and the restaurant next door will cook what you just bought. Free parking out front, or a 15-minute walk from National Museum metro (Gold Line). Hours are reported as 9am–6pm daily, closing for Friday prayers.
Corniche Fish Market
A small jetty market a short drive from the Museum of Islamic Art, where fishing boats land their morning haul under a shaded canopy. Opens from 6am, seven days a week, with public parking next door. Expect sherry, blue swimmer crab and whatever the boats brought in that morning. Arrive early and you can buy straight off the boat.
Al Wakrah Fish Market
One of Qatar's oldest fish markets, with daily catch brought in by local fishermen. The go-to market for residents in the south of Doha.
Al Khor Fish Market
Around 20 outlets selling local and imported fish, from hamour and shrimp to shellfish. The closest option for anyone living in the north.

Kingfish Ban 2026: What It Means for Buyers
Qatar's Ministry of Municipality runs the annual kingfish ban from 15 August to 31 October (The Peninsula). Fixed gillnets are banned during this period, but hook-and-line fishing is still allowed. Kingfish is still on sale, just in smaller quantities. Past bans have caused shortages that pushed kingfish prices well above normal. Expect supply and prices to ease from November.
How to Pick Fresh Fish: The 60-Second Check
- 👁️ Eyes: clear and bulging, not cloudy or sunken
- 🔴 Gills: bright red, not brown
- 👆 Flesh: springs back when pressed
- 👃 Smell: like the sea, not "fishy"
- ✨ Skin: shiny, with scales tight to the body
Cleaning & Cutting: What to Ask For
- Hamour: fillet or whole cleaned
- Kingfish: steaks (1–2 cm)
- Shaari / Safi: whole, scaled and gutted for frying
- Jesh: curry cut
Most counters cut while you shop.
